Thor was always impressive, but that was once simple; it is only in the last decade of his life-- two years, really, that he also became complicated. In many ways, he retains the bombastic qualities that were his birthright and further enhanced by his staunchly patriarchal upbringing as aristocracy and heir to the throne of a warlike society. Though his father, Odin, experienced a change of heart over his long centuries, Asgard as a culture was characterized by a very easy security in its position as one of, if not the most dominant organized force in the local universe and the eight other ones adjacent.
That is the world Thor was born and raised in: mad, brutal glory, privilege, a confident future in leadership, reward that was always proportionate to effort in a world where his passions were always power. It's not that he didn't have to work-- training was brutal, battle was often too, he had heart enough to regret the costs of failure in battle. The loyalty of his friends Sif and the Warriors Three was perhaps his greatest achievement in all that time, and won through centuries of companionship, learning about them, learning about himself, getting over stupid stuff. However, he had it easier than the vast majority of other Asgardians, if for no more reason than because he was blessed with ability that frankly exceeded his ambitions.
